Plot/Intro:
Since anyone can remember, the leader of the great Lands of Aragetten has been Instigator. Our white king is just and kind, he loved the people and the people love him. Of course, the people meaning his people, the Unicorns. Although the good King has wings, a gift from the Gods, no one has ever questioned his power. No one, except his own son.
When Instigator found love, it left quickly. While birthing their child she slipped away from him into the world of death. The king of purity was in such a state of grieving that he was unable to look at his son for the first few days of his life. The Prince was escorted to another mare and raised along with her filly. After his initial period of sadness, Instigator returns to his son to find that he is comfortable with his foster mother and her filly enough to stay. The king decides to leave his son, whom he names Aragon, with them until he is weaned, and then whisk him away completely. Unfortunately, what he did not count on, was a deep bond forming between his son and the common filly, whom is called Nyx. Before the tragedy of loosing his mate, a filly had been born among his lords. Instigator had decided that she would be Aragon's mate, the princess. He told his son so when he came to get him at the age of one, and in response to the protests he responded simply, "'Tis meant to be.".
Aragon could not accept this. He was determined to be with the one he loved: Nyx. This was a mutual love and a mutual determination, as Nyx wanted the same. Neither cared of rank or blood, only about their love. They met daily in secret, and one day someone figured this out, and that someone was powerful, and unhappy . . .
"Wench! Commoner! Peasant!" Nyx's ears flattened, and her white body turned to greet a raging God. This being was indescribable, and she could not help but drop her jaw. He towered and she cowered. "You ruin the good king's plans, you destroy his son young!" Nyx didn't understand. Was it her fault she loved Aragon? Was it his fault he loved her? She knitted her brow, loyal to her lover and what they shared.
"'Tisn't our fault, Lord! We tried not to force ourselves into such strong emotions! Pity, pray, for our youthful blunder and convince the good king it is true!" Nyx was desperate and the God deaf to her pleas.
"Nay, peasant. I will do this for you. You shall be as black and dark as your lies. I smite thee, witch of love and sorceress of the Prince Aragon, and steal thy horn. However, thou art gifted with wings so that thou might fly away and save the good Prince good-byes. So mote it be!" Nyx's sense dimmed and then floated away.
"Unholy beast, tell my the reason of your presence and absence of my lady love!" Nyx awoke to the sound of a familiar voice in an unfamiliar tone. It was Aragon. Didn't he recognize her? She stood, and realized there was something attached to her back, and a lack of something to her forehead. She no longer had a horn, but had wings. But worse, she was not white, she black. Crying out in despair, she collapsed again, tears staining her face. "Prince Aragon, my dear love," she whispered, "flee from me. I am a monstrosity, and you are still pure. Run from me, for I am no longer Nyx but instead a being damned by the Gods."
The white unicorn approached his love, who was now a raven black Pegasus. He laid down beside her and nuzzled her feathered wings. Her scent assured him she was indeed his beloved Nyx. "Shh, shh, lady love," he cooed. "You are not damned. Do you not see the opening? We are now to leave this lands of unicorns, for you are a Pegasus. We must find lands for us to live peaceful with wings, for I am sure that I shall as the king's son. Do you not see? We are destined to be together now. Our love binds us, and our wings match us."
And such occurred. They ran off together, and found a new land to make a new kingdom. Aragon grew wings like his father. They grew bitter to wards king Instigator, but it appeared that the gods still favored him. One morning Aragon awoke to find his horn gone and his pelt black. Nyx blamed herself, and told him once again she was damned, so that he must go from her. He replied that they matched even better now.
When King Instigator heard of his son and lover he was furious. The only heir had left with a commoner damned by the gods, and was now hornless. In his rage, he lost his leniance and non-prejudice nature. He ordered all foals, and adults, who were any color besides white to be shunned and sent away from the lands. He wanted his herds pure so that the gods would love only them and help only them if a clashing of breed came along. The colored Unicorns blamed both alliances for their demise inside the herd and, calling themselves the Rogues, found comfort in only each other and the hope that someday their kingdom might overrule all others so they could punish those who outcasted them so cruelly.
Choose your path wisely, youngling, else you might find yourself among fellows who appear too hostile for your own good.
